Now then, which light would look best in a high cathedral ceiling, with the wood all painted white?

How about this bedside light in a completely white wood panelled room? Too white?

These are the questions currently doing my very unstylish head in?

If you’ve read my post called A Beach House Restyle – Help!  you’ll know that we have a huge job on getting our Jervis bay house ready for rental… and that I’m seriously style-challenged.

Luckily, my good friend Kate Broadhurst, who styled her own very gorgeous Huskisson Bed and Breakfast has been helping me a lot.

Look at Kate’s beautiful bedrooms at her B+B.

Now our beach house will look very different as there are bright yellow doors and kitchen bench tops, plus a very blue carpet on the mezzanine level.

So Kate’s advice to her novice pal is: ‘All white walls and ceiling and then accents in bold primary colours.’

Kate drove up to Sydney and dragged me joined me on a trip to Ikea and here are some of our purchases and rejections.

‘Perfect’ said Kate, so I bought two of the bog salad bowls and 12 of the little bowls.

Ideal on one of the walls near the front door.

Shoe racks would be so handy by the front door, I think. Hey, the mirror could go above.

Not yellow enough

This is the one we need!

Beach towels bought and ready to get wet.

‘Buy six of these,’ said Kate.

If we were redoing the kitchen, it’d look like this. We’d love to… but not this year.

So cute, the little yellow napkin holder is ideal.

I’m also lusting after these gorgeously fluffy towels, from Ecodownunder not Ikea though.

Now, I am serious… which of these lights should I go back and buy… I’ll need three actually…

Imagine dusting that first one!!

The painters will start on the house soon. It’s a really big job – huge. They will be painting the whole interior, ceiling and all, in Antique White USA. Gulp!

Are you stylish? Any top tips for a novice?

Cheers

Seana xx

  • I’m just as novice as you. Kate’s B and B is swoonsome – she has impeccable taste. What I know about style, I could write on a postage stamp but I do love all of those lights and think they’d all look fab. I can’t wait for the big reveal, it’s going to be all kinds of awesome!

Thank you! Painting is happening… I hope… lots of stuff still to get and do. It’s good to have a pal to boss me about. Here in Sydney I often copy what my neighbour buys… latest being pool loungers, it’s taken 7 years to buy some!

Wow the beach house will look so amazing with all that white and accent colours! Love Kate’s B&B style, too!

With lights, when I was younger I never thought about dusting, but now, under very tidy hubby’s influence, I would always go for the least dust collecting item… so number 3 looks good!
Just watched an episode of ‘selling houses Australia’ where Shaynna painted all the wood panelled walls and wooden vaulted ceilings white. It was amazing how much lighter and lovelier the place looked. Yes, a bit sad, what am I doing watching TV during the day… its the only time sports is not on in our household!!

I bought that yellow napkin holder on the weekend! And also loads of their cheap and cute napkins to go in it!

    Sonia Life Love Hiccups

Oh my – how exciting Seana – Man I would love to makeover a holiday house. I cannot wait to see what you come up with as I am sure it will be gorgeous. Yep white white and lots of white and as for yellow – well I am a yellow lover so somewhat biased 😉 xx

Hello Sonia you would be so much more suited to this task than I. Now yellow has never been my colour except that I do love the doors and kitchen benches down there so it’s growing on me. Usually I can never see past pale green.

It looks like there’s going to be lots of sunny based colours in the house and I’m liking it already! I cannot wait to see the final makeover results, I’m sure it will be fantastic!

Thank you! It’s being painted at the moment and I’ll be so nervous when I go down to see it. But the painting’s a huge job so got at least a few more days yet.
