Bilarong Playground and Reserve at Narrabeen Lake

Ooooo too much great stuff!   Not sure where to start with Bilarong Playground and Reserve; it’s a battle between the fab views, the excellent play equipment and the wonderful stone sculptures of wondrous mythical beasts.

Ummm… the sculptures win!  We love them, there are so many and they are divine, our favourites being the snoozing dragons…. or the secret doorway… or the old men..??

We had a lovely time there recently during a cricket team end of season BBQ.  The weather was warm and sunny, the lake was serene and quite inviting, the kids all played. We had even remembered our folding chairs.

Fab family fun on a Sydney Sunday.

But there is one warning… if you have bolters, or kids who are not yet safe around water this playground will scare the living daylights out of you.

There is one securely fenced area, with equipment for young kids. However, most of the playground is not fenced and it’s within spitting distance of the lake, and just a toddle away from a very busy road.Parents of wild ones beware (and I used to be that mother, so glad mine are a bit older and wiser these days.)

Bilarong Playground

Wakehurst Parkway, Narrabeen

This is a playground in two halves, with some pretty basic equipment for young children in a shaded, fenced play area and then a much larger and more adventurous playground outside that.

There is a fantastic sandpit/dry creek bed, it is huge and has great rocks and sculptures to scramble over.  A fab area for creative and imaginative play (for adults as well as the kids).   There is a wooden bridge which sadly does not come with its own troll, which is a surprise really since there are so many fabulous beasts about.

There are spicas, a huge space net (which I usually call spiders’ web climbing frames) and a roundabout too.  There’s lots of shade, casuarina trees to play amongst; it’s heaven.

There are BBQs on the reserve, plus picnic tables.  BYO shade on a hot day though.

Nearest takeaway cappuccino: BYO

Toilets/ Baby change: Toilets across other side of playgroun. Wish it was closer!

Shade: Yes, shadecloth on fenced playground; lots of trees

Enclosed: The little ones’ playground is fenced but most of playground is not fenced and is close to the lagoon and road.

Mum’s report: I’d have had a shocking time here when my kids were younger and very wild, but now they are wiser and won’t just go straight to the lake and jump in.  It’s lovely to visit here, I enjoy the views and they clamber all over the great play equipment.  It’s a really fab sandpit!

Extra:  There is a long cycleway which passes through this reserve.  Kayaks can be hired on Narrabeen Lagoon but not at this reserve. It would be cool to hire kayaks at Narrabeen and then kayak the kiddies over here for a play.

Parking: Carpark by playground and reserve

NB Further along the lake in Narrabeen there’s another excellent playground at Berry Reserve, it’s fully enclosed and right beside Tramshed Cafe click here for info.

Yes, there are some lovely cafes along there, but must say I always BYO to this place as it’s so good for a picnic. Long live the thermos flask! Do you have any other fave parks or playgrounds in the area?

Hello, it’s very accessible in that there’s no fence between the main playground and the lake. But there’s weed there and it’s not good for playing at all.

We’ve found that the best area for play is over where all the cafes are off Pittwater Road, where the kayak hire is. We’ve kayaked and swum there in the past. But the lake itself is generally not a place where people swim. The toddler playground is fenced and so very safe.
