It’s daft to live in Sydney and not enjoy the water views, but you don’t have to move the family to a harbourfront mansion to do so.
There are loads of parks and playgrounds where you can enjoy the views for free. All you need is a blanket and a picnic and don’t forget your baby, toddler or preschooler.
Set under the huge spreading branches of native fig trees in lovely Elkington Park, this playground has a small and simple play structure, ideal for younger childen. There are four swing sets outside the fenced part of the playground too.
We visit Elkington Park for its gorgeous harbour views and its plethora of paths which are great for walking with the stroller and good for bikes and trikes. Within the park a headland juts out into Sydney Harbour, it’s a wonderful place to stop for a while, soak in the vistas and some sunshine, to smell the (salty) roses.
There’s a beautiful old bandstand int he Park too, a great spot for imaginative play.
The only thing you need to be careful of is the proximity to the water as you walk around the park. Keep an eye on wayward toddlers and preschoolers. The playground itself is fenced though.
Nearest takeaway coffee: BYO… and an entire picnic.

Mum’s report: It’s hard to beat the serenity and the water views. A great place to come for a picnic with your baby and young toddlers
Extra: The Dawn Fraser Pool is at the end of the park. This is one of the prettiest and most historic of harbour swimming spots, best for little kids at low tide. Read all about Dawn Fraser Baths here.

Take it easy
I’m very lucky to live just across the road from here and it really is a fbulous spot – we had a neighbourhood Easter Egg hunt here and it’s a favourite kid’s party location. It’s great for a sunset picnic as the views west are stunning.
Unfortunately though, the Elliot St wharf is closed. I fyou don’t mind a scenic stroll through and a play at Mort St park – also good playground, I’d catch the ferry to Thames St.
