Miracle on the Great Barrier Reef – Kids Take Holiday Photos of Mum For Once

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAMiracle1: Teens in photo with their mother.

Miracle2;  Teens smiling, more or less…

Do you come home from a holiday and realise there are no photos of you beacause it was you using the camera all holiday long? I usually do.

But on the recent trip to Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef, I bought an underwater camera which the kids loved and demanded to use, and even made me pose for them.

That’s me snorkelling. Should be entitled ‘Seana in her natural habitat.’

I took loads of photos of the kids too. Above and below the water. Ms8 adored the snorkelling, once she got used to it.

Here’s me having a wee lie down on the deck of the yacht we spend two days and a night on.

And me totally posing. God, I do love being out at sea. The landlubber life is not for me.

Here’s No.1 son going into the sea for his first ever scuba dive. I was so proud of him, and not a little concerned. But the instructor was patient and thorough and kept a very close eye on him.

Look, me again… and a semi-smiling Teen15, a thrilling vision.

My favourite shot from our whole trip is this one of Rusty Rocket, he needed quite a bit of encouragement and support to get comfy snorkelling in deep water. Once he did, he was my wee snorkel buddy all the time.

Yet more posing in my cossie. Man, this is so far removed from everyday life in Sydney. Take me back.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERACheers! A cup of tea and a wide cheesy grin… and why not, it really was a great trip on that boat.

Once I’ve sorted through all the photos, I’ll write a more useful post on where we went, what we did, tips before you go etc etc.

But right now, I’m just thrilled to have some photos of myself amongst the ones of the beloved foursome.

Even see a holiday snap of yourself?

Or do you make sure you get some  as a matter of principle?

  • Ha, ha , ha – I had to laugh – I was going through holiday snaps yesterday and the only ones of me were a couple of selfies (up close and NOT so great). This is despite both boys having better cameras than me…I am glad you had such a fabulous holiday; if you love being out on the water have you been to the Whitsundays? It is gorgeous too..Cheers

Hello Monique, I would love to take the family up there too. I once sailed around the Whitsundays for a week with my mum, absolutely marvellous. It was so different to the sailing we had done as a family in Scotland, that was great but very different… in the Whitsundays Mum and I slept on the deck and snorkelled before breakfast… so long ago now. It would work really well for us.

I was so struck at the time at how excited the teenagers were and how happy, I knew that boat trip would work out well. Almost fainted when they let me be in a shot with them…. not at all a usual thing.

They are wonderful photos of the family having fun together and especially good ones of yourself I might say 🙂 My husband takes photos of me on holidays but he never says “Um it might be better if you did not pull that funny face, or take your hat off you look like a dork” hence they are a mixed bunch. However in Turkey recently there was a photographer on a small boat we took a day trip on. He took over 100 photos of ourselves and another couple, then we could choose whether to buy a CD with them on or not. He knew how to make us look good too – of course we purchased them. The girl in the other couple said “hell yeah it’s the only time I have seen my husband smiling in a photo”. Photos are such a wonderful way to remember.

They are a great way. My husband takes very poorly framed shots, I need to give him a workshop. The kids are better… maybe they’re more visual or have grown up looking at the millions of photos I have taken of them. I have such a big job to edit these holiday photos, it will take me months. Was glad to get these ones up on the blog. Much more info to come.

Thanks Julie, that holiday worked well. Hubby just got back this morning and all the kids were telling him about it, and he is so sad not to have been there with us. If only everyone was so smiley now we’re back home – and that includes me.

Yes, me too… and I’ve never been very good at taking selfies… just an age thing I think, a bit inhibited…

Who was the photographer??? You all look wonderful. I am hardly ever in photos but I really must change that. Lovely seeing you today. Sorry I had to rush off but we must catch up properly soon x

Hi Robyn, was good to see you yesterday. I’m loving my first day at home with no offspring in four weeks. So much to catch up on. All of the kids were using the new underwater camera and were fighting over having a turn. They used it in the sea too and my heart was in my mouth each time they did in case they dropped it, but they were very careful. XX

Its so good to see more of you Seana, you look amazing and I can feel the happiness and contentment radiating in your smile. That’s how I feel when I’m in the ocean too. And your kids look very happy as well, I’m sure it was a great holiday. Congratulations to your son on his first dive, he will be hooked for sure! 🙂
