Surfing lessons are a great Sydney activity for active adults and children. Or to help make you active! There are several great Sydney surf schools which we can personally recommend.
Parents, don’t be surprised if the children are much better at this essential Australian sport than you are!
Children from the age of five years can join in some group lessons.
A good idea is to chat to the surf school about doing a private lesson just for your family.

We are listing the three Sydney surf schools that our family have had surf lessons with ourselves.
These surf schools are at the easiest beaches to get too: Bondi, Manly and Dee Why. We’ll start from the south.
Surf Lessons in Sydney: What To Expect
- Decide where you’d like to learn to surf, then check out the website and make an online booking.
- But don’t be shy: phone the company to ask any questions you may have.
- You’ll be send information on where to meet up and the exact time.
- The first thing you will do is to put on your wetsuit; not always easy!
- Then you’ll slap on loads of sunscreen and carry your board down to the beach.
- Your instructor will then teach you the basics of surfing, safely on dry land.
- Next you set out to see, and wait for the waves.

Your instructor will give lots of help, telling you when to start paddling.
He or she will even give you a little push.
If you’re me, you try mightily to leap to your feet and surf… but fail repreatedly!
If you’re my kids, you get on much better.
Bondi Surf Lessons: Let’s Go Surfing
Lets Go Surfing operates at Bondi and at Maroubra too. You can book 2-hour adults or kids group lessons, or try a private lesson.
There are cheaper prices when you book a package of lessons. Kids weekend workshops are popular too.

Manly Surf School
Manly Surf School operates on its iconic namesake with classes running every day.
For children there are group lessons, after school lessons, school holiday lessons, private lessons and elite training programs.
Adults can enjoy group and private lessons, day tours and stand up paddle boarding too.

At certain times of the year, surfing lessons are also run at Palm Beach, Collaroy, Long Reef, Narrabeen, Balmoral and careel bay.

Manly Surf Guide Lessons at Dee Why Beach
This is our family’s fave as Dee Why Beach is closest to our house. Manly Surf Guide offers 2-hour lessons, full day trips with 2 x 2-hour lessons, plus surf camps for kids in school holidays and at weekends.
If coming from the city, the guide can collect you at Manly ferry and will drop you there afterwards.
