Good Enough Mum – Crust Conundrums

Now how many calories are in this little pile of crusts do you think?

Is it only me??

Does anyone else make a moral dilemma out of the question of whether to cut the crusts off the kids’ sandwiches?

I think I need help and advice!

You see, my kids love the crusts off.  But I loathe wasting food.  So if I cut off the crusts I tend to eat them myself… often with a smidge of extra butter and vegemite.

Nibble, nibble, I’m a terrible nibbler and am trying to break the habit.

What to do?

Well, generally, I don’t cut off the crusts.

Then, when I do, I sometimes keep them and eat them for breakfast or lunch.

Occasionally it all gets too  much for me and I chuck ’em into the compost bin.

What’s a nibbling mum to do?

Are you a crust cutter?  A crust nibbler?

Does anyone else in the whole wide world have this problem?

Or is it just me?

I’m sure all my mummy nibbling is the reason I’m so much bigger than I ever was pre-kids. A little bit here, a little bit there….

Oh me too… it’s so hard not to.

A friend of mine was sat down and spoken to seriously by her mum when she was pregnant: “NEVER eat the children’s leftovers,” her mum advised.

Wise words indeed… I didn’t get that advice… but would I have listened????

That’s why we have chooks! Great for crusts and lunchbox leftovers – and you get eggs in return!

I think that’s a COMPELLING reason to get chooks. I’m sure you are like me and absolutely loathe wasting still-edible food.

My kids hate crusts too, so we have soft, bread rolls. A winner!

Great idea! I knew I’d get some help if I just asked for it. Thanks Jodi.

I have one boy who eats his crust (and everything else in the home) and one boy who nibbles around the crusts. I used to cut them off but don’t bother now – my life is tooo short/busy to bother with that. They either get eaten by me, with extra butter (thank our Mum for that habit), chucked in the compost or in the bin. You could always use the cut off bits for breadcrumbs and then freeze them.

I don’t understand how you end up cutting them off, never did and it’s never been an issue…….did I miss something or have i just blundered through.
As for nibbling, em er, em, crunch!

My grandmother who raised 6 children once bemoaned the crust issue with her baker (she lived in an english village) and she still remembered and passed on his sage advice.”Madam why do you worry that your child does not like to eat the overcooked, dried up bit of the outside of the bread? It does NOT have more nutritional value than the inside!”
I think we modern mums who have had it drummed into us, that the most nutritional part of any whole food (read apples etc) is just under the skin think that it must be so with bread…

…of course in the rare instance that I DO cut them off…I nibble them too. Are we all European in this forum? I think food wastage was a big no no in post war europe….

Stop preparing foods for the kids that they don’t eat. Aside form you will tend to eat the food that they have wasted, you also like wasting money and time for that food. Prepare a food that will surely your kids would love to it.

I never cut the crusts off K’s sandwiches but that’s not to say she didn’t eat around them and throw them away at school !!!!!! Do what works for you and your family – don’t think there is a right or wrong answer – just what works and stops you nibbling !!!!
I also hate wasting food which is one of the reasons why I wouldn’t cut the crusts off !
    Have a great day !
