Pancakes On The Rocks: Kid-Friendly Sydney Eats

It started with a road trip in the USA in the late 1950s. The Australian travellers saw pancakes on the menu wherever they went and decided to open the first pancake restaurant in Australia on their return.

The Sydney Pancakes On The Rocks opened in 1975 and has been operating at the same address on Hickson Street since then.

Always a family favourite, Pancakes On The Rocks has since expanded both its menu and locations.

There are now seven restaurants, each serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. On the menu are pizzas, burgers, salads, beef and pork ribs and, of course, a vast range of pancakes and crepes.

Each of the restaurants make sure that younger guests are kept very happy and entertained. There’s an extensive kids menu as well as colouring-in, video jukeboxes and a relaxed, family-friendly vibe.

When I visited recently with two hungry 11 year olds, we went straight for the pancakes and crepes. The boys had been playing cricket and I had been swimming in the sea, so our sweet treats, in very generous portions, were MOST welcome.

Pancakes On The Rocks
The Ultimate, crepes filled with cream cheese and sultanas, served with raspberry coulis and vanilla ice cream
Strawberry pancake
The Strawberry Patch, buttermilk pancakes with fresh strawberries, cream, vanilla icecream and strawberry coulis
Pancakes On the Rocks
Devil’s Delight, chocolate pancakes with strawberries, cream, chocolate ice cream , drizzled with chocolate sauce

I loved my crepes, they were stuffed full of cream cheese and sultanas, a deadly combo, and not overpoweringly filling.

The boys’ pancakes were huge, very thick and almost the consistency of cake. These boys were starving but struggled to scoff the lot.
