Taronga Zoo is a terrific place for children to visit and masses of Sydneysider families buy annual passes so that they can visit a lot.
Set on a sloping hillside above the harbour, the zoo has fabulous views to set off the modern animal displays. Most of the older style animal exhibits have now been removed and the zoo presents a strong conservation image.
In its upgrading, the needs and interests of little visitors have been kept in mind and almost all the animals can be seen from the diminutive height of walking toddlers and children in strollers. This makes the trip much more fun for them and easier on the arms and backs of their parents.
There are so many animals to see and so many feeding times and keeper talks that one trip can never cover everything. The zoo is a place that families can easily visit many times in a year and indeed on Sunday mornings especially, the carpark is awash with cars unloading youngsters and strollers galore.
The elephants, chimpanzees, gorillas, seals, reptiles, giraffes, penguins and koalas are all special favourites of small children; each of these animals is the subject of a demonstration, show or keeper talk. Call/browse ahead to check the extensive timetable of events.
Lions and tigers are also must-sees for the young visitor and the exhibits for both these animals are very good indeed.
Cafe: Several cafes and restaurants, some serving children’s meals
Baby change/toilet: Every female toilet has a baby change table and there are some separate Parents Rooms
Strollers: There are several sets of steps in the zoo which can be bypassed by the sloping walkways. Strollers can be hired from the main entrance for a fee.
Dad’s report: It’s a good idea to take a stroller to the zoo, even if your child can walk a fair way. The zoo is on a slope and carrying the kids all the way back up is hard work.
Our children love to rush around and enjoy running up and down the broad walkways between the animal exhibits. After all this I often wish there was a cage I could put them into, just for a while, so I could have a rest and a coffee.
We bought a Zoo Friends pass which gives us a year’s free entry and you only have to go twice to pay it off. It’s one of the best buys you can make as we go at least once a month and each time there is something new to see.
Parking: Pay carpark
Nearest ferry: Yes, the zoo has its own wharf
