Sydney International Regatta Centre- With Kids

Here’s a post from Western Sydney mum, Ayesha Riaz.  Along wih her son and daughter, Ayesha enjoys exploring where she lives, the area close to the Blue Mountains.  Here she shares one of their favourite places to visit, Sydney International Regatta Centre.

Sydney International Regatta Centre

This is one of our favorite haunts in Western Sydney. Located in Penrith and offering a stunning backdrop of lower Blue Mountains, it was built in 2000 as a rowing and canoe sprint venue for the Sydney Olympic Games.

This is one of those places where you can do a lot or do nothing and still have a great time. One of the reasons we love it so much is because it hosts one of the best firework shows in Western Sydney every year on Australia Day.

There are many sporting events held at Sydney International Regatta Centre but perhaps the most popular one is the Western Sydney Marathon held every year on the October long weekend.

It is a running event catering for all abilities from families and kids to the experienced athletes. We are taking part in it for the first time this year. Hoping the kids will complete the 5km family fun run without major tantrums.

All participants are given medals at the end of the marathon and we think it’s a great yet affordable way of encouraging kids to be active.

There are lots of exciting activities at Regatta Centre to do with older kids such as jet skiing and rowing. Or you can just relax with your little ones and play a game of frisbee.

There is plenty of space to run around or ride your bike/scooters. One lap around the lake is 5 km. Our favourite activity though is to just walk around the lake and take the views in.

Most places look great on a nice sunny day but this is a place that looks spectacular on a cloudy day too! Chances are that you will witness a sporting event such as dragon boat race as these are frequent.

There are two large undercover BBQ areas. Visitors can also bring their own gas BBQ. Or if you are in a mood to pamper yourself then dine at the splendid Lakeside Restaurant. It boasts sweeping views and an extensive menu. Outdoor seating is available too. There is also a café on site.

Toilets: Public toilets available

Nearest coffee: The Lakeside Restaurant and a café on site

Bus stop nearby: Yes

Parking: Plenty of parking available on site

Mum’s report: A place that has something for everyone. Great picnic spot all year round. Just check the website before going to see if there is a major sporting event on. These are great to watch but avoid if you are looking for a quiet time.

Thanks so much Ayesha, our family has never visited the Regatta Centre, and we must do so, maybe as a stop on a trip to the Blue Mountains.
